About this work

A work made of oil and ink on paper, laid down on canvas.

Description from the Art Institute of Chicago.

Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson painted this in about 1810, aged about 38. It is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.

How it was made

Oil paint
Pigment ground in a drying oil, usually linseed. It dries slowly, so painters could blend on the canvas, build up thin translucent glazes, and rework a picture over weeks. Canvas replaced wooden panels in the 1500s because it is lighter and can be rolled.
Ink on paper
Ink made from soot and animal glue, ground with water on an inkstone. A single brush can give a hair-fine line or a broad wash, and nothing can be corrected.
