About Ochre Editions

Museums hold millions of works they can't hang. Several of the largest now publish the ones that have passed out of copyright, as large image files anyone may use. Ochre Editions gathers a selection of those images in one place, with the museum's own record beside each one, so you can find a work, learn what it is, and take it home.

Taking it home costs nothing if you want the file. Every work has a download link to the museum's full-resolution image, with no account and no watermark. If you'd rather have it on paper, we have it printed to order on archival cotton rag, framed or unframed, at a size the museum's file can honestly support.

How we choose

We only include an image when the museum itself has released it into the public domain, either under CC0 or with its own open-access flag. Age alone isn't enough: a museum may hold a very old work and still not have cleared its photograph. Our museums page lists where the works come from and how each museum marks them.

We never retouch, recolour or crop a work. A print shows the whole image, set on its paper with a margin weighted towards the bottom, the way a framer would mat it.

What we sell

Reproductions. A print from Ochre Editions is a photomechanical reproduction of a public-domain work, made by our print partner's labs in the United States. It is not an original, it isn't signed, and it is not an investment. Our weekly limited editions are numbered runs of one hundred reproductions, each with a certificate that says exactly that.

Who we are

A small, independent studio. No museum endorses Ochre Editions or chooses what we sell. You can reach us through the contact page.
