About this work
Pieter de Hooch painted this (probably ca. 1662–65), aged about 33. It is now at The Met in New York.
How it was made
- Oil paint
- Pigment ground in a drying oil, usually linseed. It dries slowly, so painters could blend on the canvas, build up thin translucent glazes, and rework a picture over weeks. Canvas replaced wooden panels in the 1500s because it is lighter and can be rolled.
Pieter de Hooch
Dutch, 1629–1684 · Born in Rotterdam; died in Amsterdam.
De Hooch was born in Rotterdam and trained, according to an early biographer, with Nicolaes Berchem in Haarlem. His finest work dates from his years in Delft in the late 1650s, when he painted sunlit courtyards and orderly interiors with views through doorways into further rooms, close to the concerns of his contemporary Vermeer. After moving to Amsterdam in the early 1660s he painted grander interiors for a wealthier clientele.
