Xiao Yuncong
Chinese, 1596–1673

Xiao Yuncong was a painter from Wuhu in Anhui province who refused to serve the Qing after the fall of the Ming dynasty and lived as a loyalist recluse. He is regarded as the founder of the Gushu school of landscape painting, known for its dry, angular brushwork and crystalline rock forms. His designs for a woodblock-illustrated album of the scenery of Taiping prefecture, published in 1648, were widely influential.
