About this work

Man with a beard, facing left, his left hand gesturing upwards. The lower half of his coat outlined.

Text from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

How it was made

Graphite
Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
Laid paper
Handmade on a mould of close-set wires, which leave fine parallel lines you can see when the sheet is held to the light.

Daniel Huntington

American, 1816–1906

Huntington studied with Samuel F. B. Morse and Henry Inman in New York and made several journeys to Italy, which shaped his early allegorical and religious pictures, such as Mercy’s Dream. He became one of New York’s most sought-after portraitists, painting politicians, financiers and clergy, and served as President of the National Academy of Design for two long terms. He was also a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and served as its vice-president.
