About this work
A work made of oil on canvas.
Description from the Art Institute of Chicago.
Jean Louis Forain painted this in 1899, aged 47. It is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.
How it was made
- Oil paint
- Pigment ground in a drying oil, usually linseed. It dries slowly, so painters could blend on the canvas, build up thin translucent glazes, and rework a picture over weeks. Canvas replaced wooden panels in the 1500s because it is lighter and can be rolled.
Jean Louis Forain
French, 1852–1931
Forain was a friend and follower of Degas and showed in four of the Impressionist exhibitions. He became best known as a caricaturist, contributing incisive drawings to the Paris press that mocked the bourgeoisie, the courts and politics, often with sharp captions. His paintings and pastels return to Degas’s subjects – backstage at the opera, the racecourse, the café – and his later work turned to courtroom and religious themes.
