About this work

The image shows a castle with a circular tower, a statue positioned on a pedestal on a path leading to the castle entrance. Tall trees flank the path, forming a natural archway. The castle walls have fortified turrets and an ornate gateway with intricate stonework and carvings. In the background, there are more trees and faint outlines of hills. The scene is in a monochromatic sepia tone, emphasizing depth and detail with subtle shading variations.

Daniel Marot the Younger drew this in the 1730s (?), aged about 35. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

How it was made

Pen and ink
Drawn with a quill or reed pen, often with wash added by brush to model light and shadow.
Laid paper
Handmade on a mould of close-set wires, which leave fine parallel lines you can see when the sheet is held to the light.
