Nun’s Badge with the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, ca. 1710

Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez came from a dynasty of painters in Mexico City and worked alongside his brother Juan, the two of them leading painting in New Spain around 1700. He painted altarpieces and devotional images for churches and convents, as well as portraits, in a warm and increasingly theatrical Baroque manner. Late in life he was ordained a priest. He also painted nun’s badges, small devotional images worn on the habit by nuns of certain orders.
