Li Gonglin
ca. 1049–1106

Li Gonglin was a scholar-official of the Northern Song dynasty and one of the most admired painters in Chinese history. A friend of the poet Su Shi, he raised baimiao, painting in pure ink outline without colour, to a scholarly art, depicting horses, Buddhist and Daoist figures and illustrations of classical texts. His Five Horses scroll is especially celebrated, and for centuries later painters copied and emulated his manner.
