Drapery on a figure, probably an angel. More about this work
About this work
Drapery on a figure, probably an angel.
Text from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
How it was made
- Laid paper
- Handmade on a mould of close-set wires, which leave fine parallel lines you can see when the sheet is held to the light.
Francis Augustus Lathrop
American, 1849–1909
Lathrop trained in London, where he worked with the Pre-Raphaelite circle around Ford Madox Brown and William Morris. Back in the United States he assisted John La Farge on the decoration of Trinity Church, Boston, in the late 1870s and went on to a career in mural painting and stained glass, becoming one of the decorative artists of the American Renaissance. His drapery studies show the careful preparation behind such work.
