About this work

A work made of engraving on paper.

Description from the Art Institute of Chicago.

Hieronymous Wierix made this in about 1598, aged 45. It is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.

How it was made

Engraving
Lines cut directly into a metal plate with a steel burin, which makes them swell and taper. It took years to master, and for centuries it was how paintings travelled as pictures.

Hieronymous Wierix

Flemish, 1553–1619

Wierix belonged to a family of Antwerp engravers and worked alongside his brothers Johannes and Anton. Trained young, the brothers were remarkable for minute, precise burin work, and they produced great numbers of small devotional engravings for Catholic patrons, the Jesuits among them, during the Counter-Reformation. Their sheets of saints, virtues and scenes from the life of Christ circulated widely, reaching missions as far away as Asia and the Americas.
