About this work

The image shows a sketch of a seated bearded figure holding an orb. The figure appears muscular, with a beard merging into long hair. The face is not detailed, and draped fabric covers part of the body. There is no jewelry, and the background is plain.

Description from the National Gallery of Art.

Alessandro Vittoria drew this in 1565/1570, aged about 40. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

How it was made

Chalk
Natural black, red and white chalks. Used together on toned paper they could give the warmth of flesh with very little effort, and they were favourites for studies from life.
Pen and ink
Drawn with a quill or reed pen, often with wash added by brush to model light and shadow.
