IN CLOISTER OF CATHEDREAL, LE PUY
Description from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
How it was made
- Graphite
- Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
Arnold William Brunner
American, 1857–1925
Arnold W. Brunner was a New York architect who trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and sketched widely in Europe as a young man. He designed public buildings, hospitals and synagogues, including the Central Park West building of Congregation Shearith Israel, and worked on civic plans, notably Cleveland’s Group Plan with Daniel Burnham and John Carrère. His travel sketches show an architect’s eye for structure and detail.
