About this work

A work made of oil on canvas.

Description from the Art Institute of Chicago.

Francesco Solimena painted this in about 1700, aged about 38. It is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.

How it was made

Oil paint
Pigment ground in a drying oil, usually linseed. It dries slowly, so painters could blend on the canvas, build up thin translucent glazes, and rework a picture over weeks. Canvas replaced wooden panels in the 1500s because it is lighter and can be rolled.

Francesco Solimena

Italian, 1657–1747

Solimena was the dominant painter in Naples for half a century, continuing the grand decorative manner of Luca Giordano while giving it firmer drawing and stronger contrasts of light and shade. His frescoes fill churches such as the Gesù Nuovo and San Paolo Maggiore, and his canvases went to patrons across Europe. His large studio and academy trained many artists, among them the young Allan Ramsay.
