About this work

Image of an oval ceiling, without the room setting. At the center, a view at the sky passing an oval entablature. In the sky are Apollo, the Muses and genii. The entablature is supported by arches through which parts of further structures are shown. In four of the arches stand pedestals with griffins crouching beside a clock-like form.

PROJECT FOR THE PAINTED DECORATION OF THE CEILING OF A HALL (PAINTED OVAL CEILING)

Description from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

How it was made

Pen and ink
Drawn with a quill or reed pen, often with wash added by brush to model light and shadow.
Laid paper
Handmade on a mould of close-set wires, which leave fine parallel lines you can see when the sheet is held to the light.
