Description from the Art Institute of Chicago.
Andrea di Lione painted this in 1642/44 or 1647/51, aged about 32. It is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.
How it was made
- Graphite
- Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
- Pen and ink
- Drawn with a quill or reed pen, often with wash added by brush to model light and shadow.
- Laid paper
- Handmade on a mould of close-set wires, which leave fine parallel lines you can see when the sheet is held to the light.
Andrea di Lione
Italian, 1610–1685
