19th-century France

Impressionist painting of woman wearing green dress trying on hats.
Souvenir of a Castle in Vosges, by Victor Hugo, 1857
A young woman in a dark hat and coat with light ruffled collar sits reading a large periodical held up in her gloved hands. Flowers and foliage are suggested behind her.
The image shows two individuals walking across a muddy path. The male figure is walking to the right with a forward stride, while the female figure follows behind with a downward gaze. The man has a pronounced nose and chin and is wearing a tall hat, rolled-up pants, a vest, and shirt, with a coat or jacket slung over his shoulder. He carries an umbrella and a pair of boots tied together. The woman wears a bonnet and a long dress with a shawl, while carrying a woven basket. The background is minimal with a sketched landscape and a large shadow above the figures.
The image depicts a rustic village scene featuring thatched-roof cottages, wooden fences, and a low horizon with rooftops and chimneys. The etching showcases detailed brushstrokes capturing various textures, with a monochromatic sepia color palette. A stone or wooden wall leads into the scene, alongside grassy vegetation. The cottages create a sense of enclosure, with trees and other structures in the background. A cart is placed near the wall.
Aglaida and Boniface, by Alexandre Cabanel, c. 1857
La Cervara, the Roman Campagna, by Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, c. 1830–31
