The Third-Class Carriage, by Honoré Daumier, 1864
The image shows two individuals walking across a muddy path. The male figure is walking to the right with a forward stride, while the female figure follows behind with a downward gaze. The man has a pronounced nose and chin and is wearing a tall hat, rolled-up pants, a vest, and shirt, with a coat or jacket slung over his shoulder. He carries an umbrella and a pair of boots tied together. The woman wears a bonnet and a long dress with a shawl, while carrying a woven basket. The background is minimal with a sketched landscape and a large shadow above the figures.
The image shows a woman sitting beside a body of water, under a tree. She is wearing a long dress and holding a bonnet by her side. In the water, a person is visible from the shoulders up with short hair. The background includes a landscape with trees, water, and a distant structure that resembles a house or castle.
The image shows two individuals seated outdoors near a body of water with their feet submerged. Both individuals are seen from head to toe. The person on the left is seated with a slightly hunched posture, reading a document or a book. They have a balding head, wear glasses, a dark suit with the coat draped over their knees, and a top hat placed on the ground. The individual on the right is sitting upright with a scarf over their hair. They wear a long dress with a shawl, and their hands rest on their lap. The background features a bare tree and a rough, sketched environment. The sky and landscape are depicted in shades of light and dark.
A work made of black crayon and charcoal, on ivory laid paper.
