Jacob van Ruisdael painted this in 1648, aged 20. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

Our note:

> A steep sandy dune, thick with grass, shrubs and broken trees, rises at the right above a curving shore where white ripples swirl in steel-blue water; a red brick wall cuts up through the vegetation, and cattle graze on a distant rise.
