The woman is positioned in the center of the painting, and she faces the left, standing at the edge of the water, looking downward. She has light skin and dark hair put up under her hat. The horizon is high in the painting, where the blue-gray sky and water meet. Small ships are visible in the distance, floating on the horizon. On the right side of the painting, the yellow and green ground curves, sloping slightly downward to meet the water. The painting has loose, visible brushstrokes.","images",{"_295":296,"_297":298,"_299":300},"download_url","https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1549.jpg?dl=1","page_url","/art/woman-by-the-seaside-nga-52262","walk_url","/galleries/style/romanticism/woman-by-the-seaside-nga-52262","frame",{"_291":292,"_293":294},{"_225":283,"_125":284,"_285":286},"size",{"_276":277,"_278":279,"_280":244,"_281":282},"w",43.2,"h",36.597509765625006,"image_w","image_h",21.597509765625002,{"_287":225,"_123":171,"_154":170,"_140":87},{"_287":125,"_123":288,"_154":289,"_140":290},"era",{"_287":285,"_123":167,"_154":166,"_140":169},"facet","style/painting-18","More paintings of the 18th century",168,"moulding","natural","mount","ivory","480","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1549/480.jpg","960","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1549/960.jpg","1920","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1549/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington","city","Washington, DC",{"_311":321,"_313":322},{"_311":319,"_313":320},{"_311":317,"_313":318},{"_311":315,"_313":316},{"_311":312,"_313":314},"hex","#b9a57d","weight",0.081,"#806f49",0.1792,"#978152",0.22,"#cfc0a8",0.2277,"#dbcfbf",0.2921,"inside-the-colosseum-aic-219254","Inside the Colosseum",{"_42":382,"_222":383,"_384":385,"_386":387,"_388":389,"_390":391,"_392":-5,"_393":-5,"_394":-5,"_140":103},"c. 1823",19,"germany","Oil on canvas","100.4 × 137.5 cm (39 1/2 × 58 1/4 in.); Framed: 125 × 161 cm (49 × 63 in.)",137,100,1.2791127541589649,[367,368,369,370,371],{"_221":363,"_222":364,"_42":365,"_304":366},"Courtesy of the Art Institute of Chicago","2013.1094","Franz Ludwig Catel painted this in about 1823, aged about 40. Four three-masted ships are in the aquamarine-blue harbor between us and the land. Three of them have their sails unfurled and smoke billows from the broad, starboard side of each. Tidy rows of brown houses line the area of Boston. A puff of white smoke rises from the farthest point. Two arrow-shaped missiles, perhaps projectiles on fire, arc toward Charles Town, where billowing gray plumes of smoke rise from vivid orange fire on the far side of the landmass. Rowboats bring soldiers to the shore of Charles Town, close to where hundreds of soldiers line up and fire at each other.
