## The artist

[George Inness](https://www.ochreeditions.com/artists/george-inness), American, 1825–1894

Inness was largely self-taught and began in the manner of the Hudson River School, but journeys to Italy and France, where he admired the Barbizon painters, led him towards broader, more atmospheric landscapes.
