# Bather With Outstretched Arms (recto); Study of a Tree (verso), in Post-Impressionism

Paul Cézanne painted this in 1874/77, aged about 35. It is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Our note:

> A nude bather stands with arms flung wide, sketched in graphite in the mid-1870s, a figure related to the bathers that Cézanne returned to throughout his career. He rarely worked from the nude model, relying instead on memory, earlier drawings and the study of art, and the figure has an awkward, expressive energy.
