It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","From above, we look across a yard strung with lines of white sheets, where several women peg out washing beside a tipped-up cart and a house stands among trees at the right. Beyond, faint grey touches suggest smokestacks and smoke along the horizon, placing the scene on the edge of a working town.","We look down onto a landscape where several laundry lines have been draped mostly with white sheets or cloth to dry in a flat, grassy yard in front of a rustic house and a distant town in this horizontal painting. The scene is created entirely with thick, visible brushstrokes that creates a sense of texture on the canvas’s surface and makes many details difficult to make out. The forms of at least three women wearing skirts hang laundry out along the lines, and a person wearing trousers tends to a flat piece of green ground near the lower left corner. A few pieces of white cloth have been draped over the wooden fence that runs along the bottom edge of the canvas. A dove-gray cart with wooden carriage wheels rests, tipped forward, at the center of the laundry lines. To our right and just beyond the laundry lines, a two-story ivory and slate-blue house with a gray peaked roof sits behind a grove of emerald-green trees. The laundry field and the grassy plane beyond is painted with a pale celery green with long, horizontal strokes. Dabs of moss green and a white streak interrupt the field in the distance. Beyond that, touches of steel and silvery-gray paint suggest smokestacks and smoke in a town along the horizon, which comes about three-quarters of the way up this composition. A few patches of vivid blue sky peek through a screen of shell-pink and cream-white clouds above. The artist signed the work in brick-red paint in the lower left corner, “Berthe Morisot.”",{"_294":906,"_296":907,"_298":908},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1614.jpg?dl=1","/art/hanging-the-laundry-out-to-dry-nga-66426","/galleries/style/painting-19/hanging-the-laundry-out-to-dry-nga-66426",{"_290":291,"_292":293},{"_224":901,"_125":902,"_284":903},{"_275":898,"_277":899,"_279":882,"_281":900},55.6,47.96767578125,32.96767578125,{"_286":224,"_123":904,"_154":905,"_140":97},{"_286":125,"_123":669,"_154":670,"_140":671},{"_286":284,"_123":365,"_154":366,"_140":367},"artist/berthe-morisot","More by Berthe Morisot","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1614/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1614/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1614/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington",{"_310":925,"_312":926},{"_310":923,"_312":924},{"_310":921,"_312":922},{"_310":919,"_312":920},{"_310":917,"_312":918},"#5d7263",0.0766,"#9a8666",0.1316,"#959c88",0.1872,"#b9b193",0.265,"#cac6ba",0.3396,"Berthe Morisot","berthe-morisot","French, 1841–1895",1895,"Bourges","Morisot studied with Corot and was a founding member of the Impressionist group, exhibiting in seven of its eight exhibitions.","woman-reading-aic-14591","Woman Reading",{"_42":985,"_221":986,"_324":987,"_326":401,"_328":988,"_330":989,"_332":637,"_333":637,"_334":990,"_140":53},"1880–82","paris-salon-painting","61.2 × 50.7 cm (24 1/16 × 19 7/8 in.); Framed: 83.2 × 73.1 × 9.9 cm (32 3/4 × 28 3/4 × 3 7/8 in.)",50,61,0.8093580560947855,[970,971,972,973,974],{"_220":379,"_221":380,"_42":381,"_303":382},"1933.435","Édouard Manet painted this in 1880–82, aged about 48. At their feet a black dog carries a bird in its mouth, and a window opens onto a slender tree and distant pink-grey hills.","Three pale-skinned, blue-eyed children wearing green suits stand in a row facing us in this horizontal portrait painting. They all have round faces and full, pink cheeks. The tallest child is to the right, and he has shoulder-length cinnamon-brown hair. The other two come up to his shoulder and have blond hair. The tallest puts one arm on the far shoulder of the middle child, and the two smaller children hold hands. Each wears a pine-green, one-piece outfit with pewter-gray buttons, a wide, ivory-white collar lined with ruffles, and black, shin-high boots. The boy on our left holds a branch of dark red cherries. The middle child holds a pink rose, and the tallest a basket filled with pink roses. A black dog holding a gray and mauve-pink bird in its mouth stands in profile facing our left in the lower right corner of the canvas. The room around them has a tan-colored floor and gray walls. The room opens onto an alcove to our right with a rectangular window. A slender tree is along the left edge of the opening and a few pale, pink-tinged gray mountains line the bottom edge. Clear blue sky fills the rest of the window.",{"_294":1075,"_296":1076,"_298":1077},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1510.jpg?dl=1","/art/the-westwood-children-nga-45955","/galleries/style/painting-19/the-westwood-children-nga-45955",{"_290":291,"_292":293},{"_224":1067,"_125":1068,"_284":1069},{"_275":1064,"_277":1065,"_279":1048,"_281":1066},132,118.831787109375,103.831787109375,{"_286":224,"_123":1073,"_154":1074,"_140":89},{"_286":125,"_123":1070,"_154":1071,"_140":1072},{"_286":284,"_123":166,"_154":165,"_140":168},"style/american-colonial-and-federal","More American colonial and Federal art",29,"artist/contemporaries-of-joshua-johnson","Joshua Johnson's contemporaries","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1510/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1510/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1510/1920.jpg",{"_310":1091,"_312":1092},{"_310":1089,"_312":1090},{"_310":1087,"_312":1088},{"_310":1085,"_312":1086},{"_310":1083,"_312":1084},"#a89d8d",0.0837,"#272c1d",0.171,"#957150",0.1802,"#443c34",0.2651,"#5c584f",0.3,"Joshua Johnson","joshua-johnson","American, ca. 1763–ca. 1824",1758,1829,"in-the-wings-aic-159770","In the Wings",{"_42":1141,"_221":1142,"_324":1143,"_326":401,"_328":1144,"_330":1145,"_332":-5,"_333":-5,"_334":1146,"_140":99},"1899","60.5 × 73.8 cm (23 3/16 × 29 1/16 in.); Framed: 82.6 × 95.6 × 11.5 cm (32 1/2 × 37 5/8 × 4 1/2 in.)",1.2268923915158592,[1126,1127,1128,1129,1130],{"_220":379,"_221":380,"_42":381,"_303":382},"1933.1118","Jean Louis Forain painted this in 1899, aged 47.
