Her knees are angled slightly to our left, and her hands rest in her lap. She has a round face and smooth, lightly flushed cheeks. She has brown eyes under arched brows, a delicate, snub nose, and her rose-pink lips are closed. Her hair, which is painted with broad strokes of caramel brown and moss green, is parted on one side and pulled smoothly back, presumably tied behind her head. Tendrils fall over her shoulders. Her dress is gathered around her neck and tied with a bow at the back. The loose sleeves fall to just below her elbows, and the dress is belted around the waist. A curving swipe of canary-yellow paint could be a buckle at the front. The fabric of the dress is painted with long, visible strokes of shell and rose pink, butter yellow, and ivory white, and a few touches of sage green and periwinkle blue for shadows. She wears a ring on the middle finger of her right hand. The space around her is loosely painted with strokes of electric and cobalt blue, with unpainted canvas visible at some of the edges. To our left, over the girl's shoulder, a wooden bird cage holds an emerald-green parakeet. The bird is streaked with royal blue along its back, and the area around its hooked beak is apple red. The cage has a mint-green bow and ribbon along the top. The artist signed the painting in green on the lower right corner: “Berthe Morisot.”","images",{"_297":298,"_299":300,"_301":302},"download_url","https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1518.jpg?dl=1","page_url","/art/the-artist-s-daughter-with-a-parakeet-nga-46525","walk_url","/galleries/style/painting-19/the-artist-s-daughter-with-a-parakeet-nga-46525","frame",{"_293":294,"_295":296},{"_226":285,"_125":286,"_287":288},"size",{"_278":279,"_280":281,"_282":283,"_284":247},"w",66.60234374999999,"h",80.6,"image_w",51.602343749999996,"image_h",{"_289":226,"_123":170,"_154":169,"_140":97},{"_289":125,"_123":290,"_154":291,"_140":292},"era",{"_289":287,"_123":166,"_154":165,"_140":168},"facet","style/impressionism","More Impressionism",53,"moulding","natural","mount","ivory","480","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1518/480.jpg","960","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1518/960.jpg","1920","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1518/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington","city","Washington, DC",{"_313":323,"_315":324},{"_313":321,"_315":322},{"_313":319,"_315":320},{"_313":317,"_315":318},{"_313":314,"_315":316},"hex","#a99067","weight",0.1675,"#c5946a",0.1872,"#d4b58c",0.1897,"#9e9a80",0.2113,"#819086",0.2443,"Berthe Morisot","berthe-morisot","bio","French, 1841–1895","nationality","French","birth_year",1841,"death_year",1895,"birth_place","Bourges","death_place","Paris","about_excerpt","Morisot studied with Corot and was a founding member of the Impressionist group, exhibiting in seven of its eight exhibitions.","talking-it-over-met-11758","Talking It Over",{"_42":401,"_223":402,"_327":403,"_329":404,"_331":405,"_333":406,"_335":-5,"_337":-5,"_339":-5,"_140":103},"1872","united-states","realism","Oil on canvas","22 1/4 x 29 1/4 in. Between the stump and fallen tree, the peanut-brown surface of the water is smooth. Tiny in scale beneath the fallen tree and easily overlooked, there are two men and a dog in a boat. One man stands at the back of the boat and pushes it along with a long pole. He wears a tall, brown, cloth hat, a white shirt rolled up to the elbows under a blue vest, and loose-fitting pants. A second man wears a flat-topped, white hat with a black brim, a long, forest-green jacket, and tight-fitting slate-blue pants. He braces a rifle against one shoulder and shoots into the forest. The dog is white with brown spots, and it stands with its front paws on the edge of the boat, presumably ready to spring after the target. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","Waves of bottle-green water break over boulders on a sandy shore, while sailboats dot the bay and hills curve around it beneath a sky glowing from butter yellow to mint green.","Across a short stretch of sand in front of us, waves of bottle-green water break over two boulders on the shoreline, with sailboats in the water beyond, in this wide, horizontal painting. One boulder is at the left edge of the painting; the other is a short distance away, about a quarter of the way across. The water cascades down between those large rocks. Across the rest of the beach, the waves flare up to break toward us in white, foamy surf. The land curves back into view on both sides of the canvas with muted, sage-green hills and, to our left, dark green trees on more craggy boulders. A more distant finger of land to our left stretches nearly halfway across the horizon, which comes about halfway up the composition. Minuscule in scale there, smoke pours out of a chimney, which is surrounded by pale yellow buildings. A mound emerges from the horizon to our right of center. About ten sailboats float on the water. The closest one to us is near the center of the painting, and the tiny forms of people aboard can just barely be made out. The other boats become smaller as they move back to the horizon, and some are only a touch of white or gray on the canvas. White and pale lavender-purple clouds sweep up from the horizon into the sky, which glows butter yellow along the left edge. The sky cools to mint green in the upper right corner. Several white or brown birds fly across the sky or low over the water. The artist signed and dated the lower left, “M. J. Heade 1864.”",{"_297":959,"_299":960,"_301":961},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1531.jpg?dl=1","/art/rio-de-janeiro-bay-nga-50281","/galleries/style/painting-19/rio-de-janeiro-bay-nga-50281",{"_293":294,"_295":296},{"_226":951,"_125":952,"_287":953},{"_278":948,"_280":949,"_282":932,"_284":950},106.1,59.971728515624996,44.971728515624996,{"_289":226,"_123":957,"_154":958,"_140":97},{"_289":125,"_123":954,"_154":955,"_140":956},{"_289":287,"_123":371,"_154":372,"_140":373},"style/antebellum-america","More Antebellum America",33,"artist/martin-johnson-heade","More by Martin Johnson Heade","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1531/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1531/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1531/1920.jpg",{"_313":975,"_315":976},{"_313":973,"_315":974},{"_313":971,"_315":972},{"_313":969,"_315":970},{"_313":967,"_315":968},"#2c2316",0.0912,"#705f31",0.121,"#b9b09c",0.1613,"#95956a",0.2717,"#d5b776",0.3548,"Martin Johnson Heade","martin-johnson-heade","1819–1904",1904,"Heade travelled restlessly and worked in many genres, but is best known for three subjects: the salt marshes of New England and New Jersey, with haystacks under changing skies; hummingbirds and orchids, which he studied on journeys to Brazil and Central America; and, in later…","woman-at-her-toilette-aic-11723","Woman at Her Toilette",{"_42":325,"_223":326,"_327":328,"_329":330,"_331":332,"_333":334,"_335":336,"_337":338,"_339":340,"_140":97},"1875–80","60.3 × 80.4 cm (23 3/4 × 31 5/8 in.); Framed: 85.8 × 105.5 × 10.5 cm (33 3/4 × 41 1/2 × 4 1/8 in.)",60,1.3356737780178234,[1012,1013,1014,1015,1016],{"_222":495,"_223":496,"_42":497,"_306":498},"1924.127","Berthe Morisot painted this in 1875–80, aged about 29.
