It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","We look slightly down onto a scene with people gathering in small groups in a cobblestone town square lined with rows of brick, wood, and stone buildings, many with stepped rooflines, in this horizontal painting. Singly or in pairs or trios, men, women, and children walk across the square, move goods around, or talk to merchants. All the people have light skin. Many of the men have mustaches and wear hats, and some carry swords. In tones of black, olive green, brick red, and plum purple, they wear hip-length cloaks over jackets, with white collars or ruffs and brass buttons, and knee-length breeches over yellow or black stockings. The women all wear long dresses in salmon pink, coral red, or golden yellow, with white collars or ruffs, and many wear black, ankle-length cloaks, some with hoods. Closest to us, a sumptuously dressed man and woman walk toward us while another similarly elegant couple walks away. Also facing away from us, to our left, a man wearing a large drum strapped around his waist raises one drumstick as he looks over his left shoulder. Nearby, a woman peers up out of a cellar door that opens on an angle to the street. More couples gather around a well across the square, and two women and a child talk to a third woman selling wares at a wooden table to our right. A pair of hooded priests or monks walk near a man blowing on a trumpet on horseback. The buildings are mostly shades of brick red and brown, and most have three or four stories with steeply pitched roofs. More people walk along side streets leading off the main square. One gap in the buildings across from us leads to a nickel-gray stone church with a pointed spire and square tower. A grassy, green hill rises steeply beyond the buildings to our right, leading down to a waterway that extends up and away into the distance. A few boats float in the water, which reflects the leaden-gray sky. Beyond the town square, a brown stone structure like a fortress with turret towers and crenellated walls looms along the ridge of the hill to our right. Tiny in scale, people on horseback and tending sheep dot the hillside below. The date “1590” is painted on the front of one of the buildings across from us while another date, “1597,” is painted on the end of a short wall near the lower left corner.",{"_300":553,"_302":554,"_304":555},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1590.jpg?dl=1","/art/the-marketplace-in-bergen-op-zoom-nga-57418","/galleries/style/northern-renaissance/the-marketplace-in-bergen-op-zoom-nga-57418",{"_296":551,"_298":552},{"_230":543,"_125":544,"_290":545},{"_280":540,"_282":541,"_284":524,"_286":542},97.2,78.97792968750001,63.97792968750001,{"_292":230,"_123":549,"_154":550,"_140":89},{"_292":125,"_123":546,"_154":547,"_140":548},{"_292":290,"_123":166,"_154":165,"_140":168},"style/painting-16","More paintings of the 16th century",95,"artist/contemporaries-of-abel-grimmer","Abel Grimmer's contemporaries","natural","ivory","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1590/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1590/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1590/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington","Washington, DC",{"_319":573,"_321":574},{"_319":571,"_321":572},{"_319":569,"_321":570},{"_319":567,"_321":568},{"_319":565,"_321":566},"#2b221c",0.1323,"#a9a391",0.1735,"#724934",0.1741,"#4d3627",0.2484,"#726454",0.2717,"Abel Grimmer","abel-grimmer","Flemish, c. 1570–1618/1619",1570,1619,"margarethe-vohlin-obverse-nga-33755","Margarethe Vöhlin [obverse]",{"_42":627,"_227":628,"_333":629,"_335":403,"_337":630,"_339":405,"_341":-5,"_342":-5,"_343":631,"_140":99},"1527","overall (visible surface, greatest height): 43 × 30 cm (16 15/16 × 11 13/16 in.) framed: 50.01 × 37.62 × 5.08 cm (19 11/16 × 14 13/16 × 2 in.)",30,43,0.69091796875,[612,613,614,615,616],{"_226":556,"_227":557,"_42":558,"_312":559},"1947.6.5.a","Bernhard Strigel painted this in 1527, aged 67. The man is facing slightly to the side and downward, with his body oriented to the left and his head turned towards the viewer. He has a prominent forehead, a defined nose, a furrowed brow, and a scrunched face. His hair is thinning on top, with longer strands curling around the back and sides of his head. The man has a beard with similar curled texture as his hair. He is wearing a garment that drapes over his shoulders, with visible folds and a texture that suggests a substantial fabric. No jewelry or objects are in his hands, as they are not visible in this image. The background is plain with a light, sketchy look, focusing attention on the man as the central figure in the circular composition.",{"_300":709,"_302":710,"_304":711},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1582.jpg?dl=1","/art/head-of-an-apostle-nga-56181","/galleries/style/northern-renaissance/head-of-an-apostle-nga-56181",{"_296":297,"_298":299},{"_230":706,"_125":707,"_290":708},{"_280":432,"_282":704,"_284":434,"_286":705},83.51529140219273,59.51529140219274,{"_292":230,"_123":443,"_154":444,"_140":91},{"_292":125,"_123":293,"_154":294,"_140":295},{"_292":290,"_123":438,"_154":439,"_140":295},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1582/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1582/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1582/1920.jpg",{"_319":725,"_321":726},{"_319":723,"_321":724},{"_319":721,"_321":722},{"_319":719,"_321":720},{"_319":717,"_321":718},"#4f4439",0.1039,"#8d8372",0.1401,"#655849",0.15,"#7a6e5d",0.1637,"#e0dac1",0.4423,"still-life-with-flowers-a-snail-and-insects-met-382608","Still Life with Flowers, a Snail and Insects",{"_42":774,"_227":775,"_333":776,"_335":682,"_337":684,"_339":777,"_341":778,"_342":779,"_343":780,"_140":99},"1589","Watercolor, gouache, and shell gold on vellum","Sheet: 4 5/8 x 3 11/16 in.
