It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","The Virgin, in a midnight-blue robe scattered with golden stars, supports the Christ Child as he stands on her knee, one hand holding her sky-blue scarf and the other a scroll with the words “EGO S…”, the beginning of a Latin declaration, “I am…”.","A woman sits and supports a baby standing on her lap, both against a gold background in this arched, vertical painting. The woman and baby’s light skin is shaded with faint green, and they have pale pink cheeks. The woman’s body faces us. She tips her head toward the baby who stands on her knee, to our right. The woman looks at us with light brown eyes under curving brows. She has a long, straight nose, and her small pink lips are closed. Her blond hair is mostly covered by a midnight-blue robe that drapes over her shoulders, across her lap, and pools on the floor. The robe is lined with goldenrod yellow, edged with bright gold, and has gold starburst-like designs on the shoulder we can see and top of the head. The dress she wears underneath has more gold stars creating a pattern across the pearl-white fabric. A sky-blue scarf wraps over her head and loops across her shoulders. The baby holds one end of the scarf, and his other elbow rests on the woman’s shoulder. She props him up with both hands. He has a cap of blond curls and chubby cheeks with delicate features. His geranium-red garment falls over a pale blue skirt that reaches his bare feet. In the hand near the woman’s shoulder, he holds a scroll with the letters “EGO S.” The floor beneath them is mint green and has gold writing across the front, reading, “AVE.G ANN O.D M.CCCC.XIII.” The woman and baby’s disc-like gold halos blend into the gold background, which is visibly cracked in some areas. The panel comes to a pointed arch at the top.",{"_290":365,"_292":366,"_294":367},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1362.jpg?dl=1","/art/madonna-and-child-nga-12111","/galleries/style/italian-renaissance/madonna-and-child-nga-12111",{"_286":287,"_288":289},{"_221":360,"_125":361,"_280":362},{"_271":357,"_273":358,"_275":359,"_276":341},67.5103759765625,128.5,52.5103759765625,{"_282":221,"_123":363,"_154":364,"_140":99},{"_282":125,"_123":283,"_154":284,"_140":285},{"_282":280,"_123":166,"_154":165,"_140":168},"artist/lorenzo-monaco","More by Lorenzo Monaco","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1362/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1362/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1362/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington","Washington, DC",{"_306":385,"_308":386},{"_306":383,"_308":384},{"_306":381,"_308":382},{"_306":379,"_308":380},{"_306":377,"_308":378},"#915c42",0.0738,"#f1ede7",0.0797,"#707862",0.1579,"#3d3d40",0.2419,"#d6aa6d",0.4467,"Lorenzo Monaco","lorenzo-monaco","Italian, Florence (?) ca. 1370–1425 Florence (?)",1370,1425,"Lorenzo Monaco, “Lorenzo the Monk”, took vows at the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence, a centre of manuscript illumination.","man-seated-holding-a-forked-staff-nga-6082","Man Seated Holding a Forked Staff",{"_42":451,"_218":452,"_320":453,"_322":323,"_324":454,"_326":455,"_328":-5,"_330":-5,"_332":-5,"_140":101},"c. 1514/1515","print","Print","engraving","sheet (trimmed close to plate mark): 16.4 x 14.8 cm (6 7/16 x 5 13/16 in.)",14.8,16.4,0.8909454727363681,[436,437,438,439,440],{"_217":368,"_218":369,"_42":370,"_299":371},"1943.3.2906","Giovanni Antonio da Brescia made this in about 1514/1515, aged about 44. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","An old man and a young woman holding an infant are seated together in the center of this almost square painting. All three people have pale, peachy skin. To our left, the man sits on a low, tan brick wall with his head bowed to look at the baby on the woman’s lap. A periwinkle-blue cloak is wrapped around the kelly-green robe that covers his shoulders, back, and legs. One hand grips a short staff planted on the ground. His receding white hair and beard are thin and scraggly with tufts sticking out over his ears. The woman sits next to and slightly in front of him, to our right, on a low rock, her body angled toward the man. A long, cobalt-blue cloak is draped around her shoulders and covers her knees over her rose-pink gown. Her honey-brown hair is parted in the middle and gathered at the back of her head. Her brown eyes look down at the infant, who is blond with brown eyes. A long white shawl is tucked into the neckline of her dress, drapes over her shoulders, and wraps under the baby as she cradles his body with one hand under his backside and the other behind his head. The baby lies on his back with his head turned toward the woman, and he points to her with one outstretched arm. The dirt ground is scattered with pebbles that make a loose ring around the trio, with moss-green growth to either side. A brown brick wall fills the upper half of the composition behind the people and extends off the top edge. A rounded arch pierces the back wall to our right of the woman. On the other side of the opening, trees with copper-brown leaves grow up along the left and the landscape beyond opens onto rocky hills with a white, square tower. In the deep distance, the silhouette of a town is painted in robin’s egg-blue against a pale peach horizon line. Thin, white clouds skim across the blue sky above.",{"_290":1065,"_292":1066,"_294":1067},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1498.jpg?dl=1","/art/the-holy-family-nga-41590","/galleries/style/italian-renaissance/the-holy-family-nga-41590",{"_286":287,"_288":289},{"_221":1060,"_125":1061,"_280":1062},{"_271":1057,"_273":1058,"_275":1042,"_276":1059},60.6,51.9720703125,36.9720703125,{"_282":221,"_123":1063,"_154":1064,"_140":89},{"_282":125,"_123":283,"_154":284,"_140":285},{"_282":280,"_123":166,"_154":165,"_140":168},"artist/contemporaries-of-giorgione","Giorgione's contemporaries","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1498/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1498/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1498/1920.jpg",{"_306":1081,"_308":1082},{"_306":1079,"_308":1080},{"_306":1077,"_308":1078},{"_306":1075,"_308":1076},{"_306":1073,"_308":1074},"#426787",0.1575,"#9b7a33",0.1605,"#bba78a",0.1764,"#423326",0.1845,"#835d3f",0.3211,"Giorgione","giorgione","Venetian, 1477/1478–1510",1477,1510,"the-annunciation-met-459016","The Annunciation",{"_42":1134,"_218":1135,"_320":1136,"_322":323,"_324":1137,"_326":1087,"_328":617,"_330":617,"_332":-5,"_140":101},"ca. 1490","7 1/2 x 12 3/8 in.
