It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","Two women in dusky pink and grey, one seated and one standing with a red veil lifted by the wind, look out from a green clifftop over a sea scattered with sailboats and a steamer. Monet spent much of 1882 at Pourville on the Normandy coast near Dieppe, painting the cliffs, beaches and changing sea.","From a high perspective, we look beyond two overlapping, emerald-green hills to a body of powder-blue water dotted with sailboats in this loosely painted horizontal landscape. Closest to us, the hills create a shallow V that spans the lower third of the composition, with the right-hand hill rising to more than halfway up the right edge. The hills are painted with dashes and long strokes mostly in seafoam, shamrock, and celery green, with some swipes of peach, goldenrod yellow, and royal blue. On the hill to our left, one woman sits and the other stands next to her. They wear hats, long-sleeved, fitted jackets, and long skirts in tones of dusky pink and dove gray. A touch of peach on the seated woman, to our left, gives the impression of a pale face. A red veil or scarf at the back of the other woman’s hat is lifted, as if in the wind. The water is painted with blended strokes of pale blue, light turquoise, smoky mauve pink, and touches of soft peach. The horizon comes two-thirds of the way up the composition, and the sky is painted with the same tones of blue, green, and peach to suggest a screen of clouds. Triangles and dashes of slate blue suggest about three dozen sailboats, rowboats, and one steamship in the rippling water. Squiggles of teal and sage green create reflections for some of the boats. The brushstrokes are visible throughout. In some areas, the paint is so thinly applied that the texture of the canvas shows through, especially in the sky. The artist signed the work in the lower left corner: “Claude Monet 82.”",{"_297":436,"_299":437,"_301":438},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1613.jpg?dl=1","/art/cliffs-at-pourville-nga-66425","/galleries/style/impressionism/cliffs-at-pourville-nga-66425",{"_293":294,"_295":296},{"_226":433,"_125":434,"_287":435},{"_278":430,"_280":431,"_282":413,"_283":432},115,74.6435546875,59.6435546875,{"_289":226,"_123":169,"_154":168,"_140":85},{"_289":125,"_123":372,"_154":373,"_140":374},{"_289":287,"_123":369,"_154":370,"_140":371},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1613/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1613/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1613/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington","Washington, DC",{"_313":456,"_315":457},{"_313":454,"_315":455},{"_313":452,"_315":453},{"_313":450,"_315":451},{"_313":448,"_315":449},"#3f6031",0.0621,"#808653",0.0831,"#607853",0.1558,"#97b09f",0.2508,"#b1bca5",0.4482,"ballet-at-the-paris-opera-aic-61603","Ballet at the Paris Opéra",{"_42":511,"_223":512,"_327":513,"_329":330,"_331":514,"_333":515,"_335":516,"_336":516,"_337":517,"_140":75},"1877","watercolour","Drawing and Watercolor","Pastel over monotype on cream laid paper","Plate: 35.2 × 70.6 cm (13 7/8 × 27 13/16 in.); Sheet: 35.9 × 71.9 cm (14 3/16 × 28 5/16 in.)",70,1.9971408148677627,[496,497,498,499,500],{"_222":303,"_223":304,"_42":305,"_306":307},"1981.12","Edgar Degas painted this in 1877, aged 43. On our left, a pale young man in a white tunic looks with eyes wide and lips parted at a group of three people on our right. The young man's right hand, on our left, is raised to stroke the head of a reddish-brown horse at his right shoulder. He stands with feet planted wide, knees bent, and he curls his left hand into a fist. Behind him, a man holds up a fluttering, light blue cape. A mottled red wall forms a backdrop to this scene on our left. The tight group gathered under a tree on our right stares back at the young man. The trio is made up of a balding, older man, a light-skinned boy also wearing a white tunic, and, closest to us, a brown-skinned woman wearing a marigold-orange shirt and a maroon-red skirt. Behind this group, a pair of pale raised arms suggests a fourth person, but the head is missing or has been painted over. The ground under the people is saffron orange. In the center of the picture, beyond the people, a group of horses stands near a green bank by a river, its surface reflecting white. The far bank is lined with white buildings. Tan and olive-green slopes rise from the opposite riverbank under a pale blue sky with cream-white clouds sweeping along the top edge of the composition.
