It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","From above, we look across a yard strung with lines of white sheets, where several women peg out washing beside a tipped-up cart and a house stands among trees at the right. Beyond, faint grey touches suggest smokestacks and smoke along the horizon, placing the scene on the edge of a working town.","We look down onto a landscape where several laundry lines have been draped mostly with white sheets or cloth to dry in a flat, grassy yard in front of a rustic house and a distant town in this horizontal painting. The scene is created entirely with thick, visible brushstrokes that creates a sense of texture on the canvas’s surface and makes many details difficult to make out. The forms of at least three women wearing skirts hang laundry out along the lines, and a person wearing trousers tends to a flat piece of green ground near the lower left corner. A few pieces of white cloth have been draped over the wooden fence that runs along the bottom edge of the canvas. A dove-gray cart with wooden carriage wheels rests, tipped forward, at the center of the laundry lines. To our right and just beyond the laundry lines, a two-story ivory and slate-blue house with a gray peaked roof sits behind a grove of emerald-green trees. The laundry field and the grassy plane beyond is painted with a pale celery green with long, horizontal strokes. Dabs of moss green and a white streak interrupt the field in the distance. Beyond that, touches of steel and silvery-gray paint suggest smokestacks and smoke in a town along the horizon, which comes about three-quarters of the way up this composition. A few patches of vivid blue sky peek through a screen of shell-pink and cream-white clouds above. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","Two women in dusky pink and grey, one seated and one standing with a red veil lifted by the wind, look out from a green clifftop over a sea scattered with sailboats and a steamer. Monet spent much of 1882 at Pourville on the Normandy coast near Dieppe, painting the cliffs, beaches and changing sea.","From a high perspective, we look beyond two overlapping, emerald-green hills to a body of powder-blue water dotted with sailboats in this loosely painted horizontal landscape. Closest to us, the hills create a shallow V that spans the lower third of the composition, with the right-hand hill rising to more than halfway up the right edge. The hills are painted with dashes and long strokes mostly in seafoam, shamrock, and celery green, with some swipes of peach, goldenrod yellow, and royal blue. On the hill to our left, one woman sits and the other stands next to her. They wear hats, long-sleeved, fitted jackets, and long skirts in tones of dusky pink and dove gray. A touch of peach on the seated woman, to our left, gives the impression of a pale face. A red veil or scarf at the back of the other woman’s hat is lifted, as if in the wind. The water is painted with blended strokes of pale blue, light turquoise, smoky mauve pink, and touches of soft peach. The horizon comes two-thirds of the way up the composition, and the sky is painted with the same tones of blue, green, and peach to suggest a screen of clouds. Triangles and dashes of slate blue suggest about three dozen sailboats, rowboats, and one steamship in the rippling water. Squiggles of teal and sage green create reflections for some of the boats. The brushstrokes are visible throughout. In some areas, the paint is so thinly applied that the texture of the canvas shows through, especially in the sky. The artist signed the work in the lower left corner: “Claude Monet 82.”",{"_294":693,"_296":694,"_298":695},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1613.jpg?dl=1","/art/cliffs-at-pourville-nga-66425","/galleries/style/impressionism/cliffs-at-pourville-nga-66425",{"_290":291,"_292":293},{"_223":690,"_125":691,"_284":692},{"_275":577,"_277":688,"_279":562,"_280":689},74.6435546875,59.6435546875,{"_286":223,"_123":583,"_154":584,"_140":85},{"_286":125,"_123":373,"_154":374,"_140":375},{"_286":284,"_123":370,"_154":371,"_140":372},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1613/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1613/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1613/1920.jpg",{"_313":709,"_315":710},{"_313":707,"_315":708},{"_313":705,"_315":706},{"_313":703,"_315":704},{"_313":701,"_315":702},"#3f6031",0.0621,"#808653",0.0831,"#607853",0.1558,"#97b09f",0.2508,"#b1bca5",0.4482,"sheet-of-studies-and-sketches-cma-128808","Sheet of Studies and Sketches",{"_42":551,"_220":552,"_327":553,"_329":330,"_331":554,"_333":555,"_335":338,"_337":338,"_339":556,"_140":75},"1858","drawing","Drawing","graphite, pen and dark brown ink, and watercolor on thick ivory wove paper","Sheet: 30.4 x 23.5 cm (11 15/16 x 9 1/4 in.)",23.5,30.4,0.7779411764705882,[748,749,750,751,752],{"_219":303,"_220":304,"_42":305,"_306":307},"1951.430","Edgar Degas painted this in 1858, aged 24.
