The woman sitting on the throne, Saint Anne, is the largest. A second woman, Mary, is smaller in scale, and she sits on Saint Anne’s lap. Mary, in turn, holds a nude baby boy on her lap. Both women have light brown eyes under faint, arched brows, smooth skin, long straight noses, and their shell-pink lips are closed. Saint Anne sits with her body facing us and she looks down with her head slightly tilted to our left. Her white head covering drapes over her shoulders and hangs down from her chin to cover her neck. She wears a marine-blue dress cinched at her waist with a black and gold belt, and a crimson-red robe that falls to and puddles around her feet. Her right arm, on our left, wraps around and holds Mary’s hip, and she supports a book with gold-edged pages with her other hand. Mary sits on Saint Anne’s right thigh, to our left, and leans toward the baby, who sits on her left knee, to our right. Her long, wavy, brown hair falls over her shoulders, and she wears a cobalt-blue robe over a lilac-purple dress. The baby has short, curly blond hair and reaches to turn the pages of the book. He has rounded cheeks and a pudgy torso. The stone throne is ornamented on the arms and at the top corners with ivory-white, nude children that are presumably also carved out of stone. The cloth hanging behind Saint Anne is decorated with glimmering gold, ornamental leaf designs against a pine-green background. The rug beneath her feet is a geometric pattern of red, tan, black, and white.",{"_291":748,"_292":749,"_294":750},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1334.jpg?dl=1","/art/the-saint-anne-altarpiece-saint-anne-with-the-virgin-and-chi-nga-1155","/galleries/style/early-netherlandish-art/the-saint-anne-altarpiece-saint-anne-with-the-virgin-and-chi-nga-1155",{"_287":288,"_289":290},{"_220":743,"_125":744,"_281":745},{"_271":740,"_273":741,"_275":742,"_277":725},109.3963623046875,247.5,94.3963623046875,{"_283":220,"_123":746,"_153":747,"_139":89},{"_283":125,"_123":284,"_153":285,"_139":286},{"_283":281,"_123":166,"_153":165,"_139":81},"artist/contemporaries-of-gerard-david","Gerard David's contemporaries","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1334/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1334/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1334/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington","Washington, DC",{"_306":767,"_308":486},{"_306":765,"_308":766},{"_306":763,"_308":764},{"_306":762,"_308":315},{"_306":760,"_308":761},"#bea081",0.0709,"#5c3413","#726454",0.1899,"#9a371e",0.2698,"#211e18","Gerard David","gerard-david","Netherlandish, 1455–1523",1455,1523,"Oudewater","portrait-of-a-carthusian-met-435896","Portrait of a Carthusian",{"_42":380,"_217":381,"_320":382,"_322":323,"_324":-5,"_326":383,"_328":-5,"_329":330,"_331":-5,"_139":101},"1446","Overall 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. The woman, Mary, and all the angels have pale, peachy skin and long, brown hair. Mary and the angels float against a pale yellow and pale peach field of light enclosed within a mass of steel-gray clouds. She presses her fingertips together in front of her chest and gazes down and to our right, her dark eyes almost closed. She has a delicate, straight nose, and her small mouth is closed. Her brown hair parts in the middle and flows down over her shoulders. The angels wear flowing gowns in sky or topaz blue, olive green, tangerine orange, white, or light pink, each with matching wings. Three angels place a gold crown on Mary's head. Four others hold up the edges of a silvery white cape, which is fastened across her shoulders with brooches of white pearls surrounding ruby-red stones. The final two angels hold up the downward-facing points of the crescent moon beneath her. In the landscape below, groupings of trees are dotted among the rolling hills, with a village in the distance to our left. The blue, hazy horizon comes about a sixth of the way up the composition. The central person is a young, nude child with curly, reddish hair and a red beaded necklace, sitting on a red cushion. Their head is turned to the right. The woman on the left wears a white head covering, a sheer veil around her neck, a green dress, and a red cloak with floral designs. She holds the torso of the child and drapes a white cloth around its legs. The woman on the right has long, flowing reddish hair and wears a white dress or robe with gold detailing down the front, on the neckline, and on the wrists. She holds an open red book, and the child is turning one of the thin pages. All three people have pale skin. Above them, in the cloudy blue sky, there is a white dove with its wings outstretched, gold lines radiating from it. Above the dove, there is an image of a crowned bearded man with pale skin, wearing red robes and holding an orb. He is against a golden background with red dots that breaks through the pale clouds.
