Dogs nose through the undergrowth, a huntsman leads a pair of greyhounds along the path, and two more riders follow behind.","An elegantly dressed man and woman ride horses toward us and to our right in a landscape with low, rolling hills, stone buildings, and trees in this horizontal painting. The two horses and riders take up the right half of the composition. Both people have pale skin and look at us. The woman has a high forehead, a straight nose, a round face, and curly blond hair falling to her shoulders. She wears a sapphire-blue dress with slashed sleeves to reveal a white garment beneath. Her hat is adorned with blue and white feathers, and she wears a string of pearls around her neck. The legs of her white horse darken to black below the knees, and the bridle is tied with blue bows near the horse’s ears. The sidesaddle sits on a woven, rug-like blanket. Next to her, to our right, the man rides a larger chestnut-brown horse with a white triangle between its eyes. The man looks at us out of the corners of his dark eyes under gathered brows. He has a long, straight nose and is cleanshaven, though a hint of a five o’clock shadow slightly darkens his cleft chin. His light brown hair falls in curls down past his shoulders, and he wears a dark brown coat with voluminous white fabric rippling out above tan-colored gloves. He holds a riding crop in his right hand, on our left, resting against his hip. Near the white horse’s feet, to our left, a dark brown dog with a white nose sniffs at a plant. Behind it, another reddish-brown dog sniffs the ground near the horse’s back hoof. A third dog stands beyond, partially obscured by bushes and plants growing in the lower left corner of the canvas. A man wearing a tall black, wide-brimmed hat and carrying a long staff leads two slender dogs resembling grayhounds on leashes along the path, a little behind the riders. Two more elegantly dressed men ride horses toward us father back on the path. Sand-colored stone buildings, hazy in the distance, are clustered around a squared tower, possibly a bell tower, to our left. The land dips gently to the horizon line in the deep distance. The riders are silhouetted against a swirling slate-blue cloud that fills most of the sky in the top two-thirds of the painting. The sky clears to pale blue to our left and then warms to golden yellow along the horizon, beyond the buildings. The artist signed the painting near the lower left corner: “A. Cuijp.”",{"_292":436,"_294":437,"_296":438},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1332.jpg?dl=1","/art/lady-and-gentleman-on-horseback-nga-1152","/galleries/style/dutch-and-flemish-baroque/lady-and-gentleman-on-horseback-nga-1152",{"_288":434,"_290":435},{"_225":426,"_125":427,"_282":428},{"_272":423,"_274":424,"_276":407,"_278":425},187,136.9453125,121.9453125,{"_284":225,"_123":432,"_154":433,"_140":99},{"_284":125,"_123":429,"_154":430,"_140":431},{"_284":282,"_123":167,"_154":166,"_140":169},"style/painting-17","More paintings of the 17th century",168,"artist/aelbert-cuyp","More by Aelbert Cuyp","natural","ivory","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1332/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1332/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1332/1920.jpg",{"_308":452,"_310":453},{"_308":450,"_310":451},{"_308":448,"_310":449},{"_308":446,"_310":447},{"_308":444,"_310":445},"#8a7652",0.1236,"#332929",0.1694,"#c4c5b6",0.2021,"#594e3b",0.2497,"#8d8e88",0.2552,"Aelbert Cuyp","aelbert-cuyp","Dutch, 1620–1691",1620,1691,"Cuyp spent his life in Dordrecht, where he trained with his father, the portraitist Jacob Gerritsz. Shown against an gray background, the vase sits on a narrow ledge, perhaps made of wood. A label with looping, cursive French text painted in gold against a baby blue background is affixed to the front of the ledge, along the bottom edge of the composition. The text reads, “C'est l'Angelicq main du grad Peinctre de Flore AMBROISE, renommé jusqu' au Rivage Moré.” A few of the flowers draw the eye, including a tulip and iris at the top of the bouquet. To our left, the tulip is mauve pink with cream-colored streaks, and one petal folds down to reveal the stamen inside. Next to it, a damselfly, an insect like a delicate dragonfly, rests on the vibrant yellow iris. The petals curling down from the iris are veined in muted burgundy red. Flowers filling in the bouquet below include a shell-pink cyclamen, a white gardenia, a closed blue and white striped columbine, a slate-blue grape hyacinth, lily of the valley, pale blue forget-me-nots, and a pink peony interspersed with leaves and greenery. The round glass vase has a narrow opening. A sprig of viola rests to our left of the vase on the ledge, and an orange, black, white, and brown butterfly perches on the stem of a pink cyclamen laying to our right of the vase. The artist signed the painting with a monogram and dated it in dark paint to our right on the face of the ledge: “AB 1621.”",{"_292":865,"_294":866,"_296":867},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1631.jpg?dl=1","/art/bouquet-of-flowers-in-a-glass-vase-nga-94743","/galleries/style/dutch-and-flemish-baroque/bouquet-of-flowers-in-a-glass-vase-nga-94743",{"_288":434,"_290":435},{"_225":860,"_125":861,"_282":862},{"_272":857,"_274":858,"_276":859,"_278":843},36.555273437500006,46.6,21.555273437500002,{"_284":225,"_123":863,"_154":864,"_140":89},{"_284":125,"_123":429,"_154":430,"_140":431},{"_284":282,"_123":167,"_154":166,"_140":169},"artist/contemporaries-of-ambrosius-bosschaert","Ambrosius Bosschaert's contemporaries","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1631/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1631/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1631/1920.jpg",{"_308":881,"_310":882},{"_308":879,"_310":880},{"_308":877,"_310":878},{"_308":875,"_310":876},{"_308":873,"_310":874},"#c9b655",0.0376,"#667672",0.0629,"#b3a38c",0.0646,"#6d4e38",0.1609,"#393122",0.674,"Ambrosius Bosschaert","ambrosius-bosschaert","Dutch, 1573–1621",1573,1621,"nude-old-man-seated-leaning-on-his-forearm-facing-left-aic-76291","Nude Old Man Seated, Leaning on His Forearm, Facing Left",{"_42":933,"_222":934,"_322":935,"_324":396,"_326":936,"_328":329,"_330":-5,"_331":-5,"_332":-5,"_140":103},"c. 1640","Red and black chalk, with touches of white chalk, on cream laid paper","34.4 × 21.7 cm (13 9/16 × 8 9/16 in.)",34,0.6339606378393909,[918,919,920,921,922],{"_221":374,"_222":375,"_42":376,"_301":377},"1990.139","Jacob Jordaens painted this in about 1640, aged about 42.
