Closest to us, several broken, jagged tree stumps are spaced across the painting’s width. A little distance away and to our left, the person wears a yellow, broad-brimmed hat, red vest, and gray pants. He reclines propped on his left elbow near a walking path beside a tall, slender tree with golden leaves. The green meadow stretching in front of him is dotted with tree stumps cut close to the ground. Beyond the meadow, puffs of white smoke trail behind a long steam locomotive that crosses a bridge spanning a tree-filled ravine, headed to our left. The ravine creates a diagonal line across the canvas, moving subtly away from us to our left. The train has climbed out of the valley, away from a cluster of brick-red buildings. The most prominent structure is a train roundhouse, a large building with a high, domed roof to the right of the tracks. Smoke rises from chimneys on long, warehouse-like buildings, and a steeple and smaller structures suggest a church and homes to our left. Hazy in the distance, a row of mountains lines the horizon, which comes about halfway up the composition. The sky above deepens from pale, shell pink over the mountains to watery, pale blue above. Across the rest of the beach, the waves flare up to break toward us in white, foamy surf. The land curves back into view on both sides of the canvas with muted, sage-green hills and, to our left, dark green trees on more craggy boulders. A more distant finger of land to our left stretches nearly halfway across the horizon, which comes about halfway up the composition. Minuscule in scale there, smoke pours out of a chimney, which is surrounded by pale yellow buildings. A mound emerges from the horizon to our right of center. About ten sailboats float on the water. The closest one to us is near the center of the painting, and the tiny forms of people aboard can just barely be made out. The other boats become smaller as they move back to the horizon, and some are only a touch of white or gray on the canvas. White and pale lavender-purple clouds sweep up from the horizon into the sky, which glows butter yellow along the left edge. The sky cools to mint green in the upper right corner. Several white or brown birds fly across the sky or low over the water. The artist signed and dated the lower left, “M. J. Heade 1864.”",{"_294":1107,"_296":1108,"_298":1109},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1531.jpg?dl=1","/art/rio-de-janeiro-bay-nga-50281","/galleries/style/antebellum-america/rio-de-janeiro-bay-nga-50281",{"_290":291,"_292":293},{"_224":1102,"_125":1103,"_284":1104},{"_275":1099,"_277":1100,"_279":1083,"_281":1101},106.1,59.971728515624996,44.971728515624996,{"_286":224,"_123":1105,"_154":1106,"_140":97},{"_286":125,"_123":287,"_154":288,"_140":289},{"_286":284,"_123":166,"_154":165,"_140":168},"artist/martin-johnson-heade","More by Martin Johnson Heade","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1531/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1531/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1531/1920.jpg",{"_310":1123,"_312":1124},{"_310":1121,"_312":1122},{"_310":1119,"_312":1120},{"_310":1117,"_312":1118},{"_310":1115,"_312":1116},"#2c2316",0.0912,"#705f31",0.121,"#b9b09c",0.1613,"#95956a",0.2717,"#d5b776",0.3548,"Martin Johnson Heade","martin-johnson-heade","1819–1904",1819,1904,"Heade travelled restlessly and worked in many genres, but is best known for three subjects: the salt marshes of New England and New Jersey, with haystacks under changing skies; hummingbirds and orchids, which he studied on journeys to Brazil and Central America; and, in later…",{"_1132":-5,"_1133":1134,"_1135":1136,"_1137":8,"_1138":1139,"_1140":8},"user","csrf","dc222d7ec445cf028bd02e61d2965461fc1194ba","cartCount",0,"dropLive","legal",[1141,1142,1143,1144,1145,1146,1147,1148,1149,1150,1151,1152],"uploadsEnabled",{"_221":1175,"_20":1176},{"_221":1173,"_20":1174},{"_221":1171,"_20":1172},{"_221":1169,"_20":1170},{"_221":1167,"_20":1168},{"_221":1165,"_20":1166},{"_221":1163,"_20":1164},{"_221":1161,"_20":1162},{"_221":1159,"_20":1160},{"_221":1157,"_20":1158},{"_221":1155,"_20":1156},{"_221":1153,"_20":1154},"credits","Open-Access Credits","accessibility","Accessibility Statement","vulnerability-disclosure","Vulnerability Disclosure Policy","own-photo","Printing Your Own Photo","copyright","Copyright and DMCA Policy","agents","Agent & API Terms","acceptable-use","Acceptable Use Policy","cookies","Cookie Policy","privacy","Privacy Policy","limited-editions","Limited Editions and Certificates","sale","Terms of Sale","terms","Terms of Use"]
