It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.","A young hunter lies across the stern of a rowboat, gripping the antler of a deer submerged in the water with one hand and holding a rope with the other, while he turns to shout at his hound swimming towards them. Behind, the trees of the Adirondack forest blaze red and gold.","A young man with a peachy, ruddy complexion lies on his stomach in a wooden rowboat on a river, reaching forward to grasp the horn of a stag almost completely submerged in the rippling water with one hand. On the opposite riverbank, gold, rust, and scarlet-red trees span the width of this horizontal painting. The boy’s arms straddle the stern of the boat so one holds the antler with his right hand, closer to us, while the other clutches a rope with a loop at the end. He turns his face, mouth agape and cheeks flushed, over his right shoulder to look to our left, at a dog swimming toward the boat. The dog has white and caramel-brown markings, with dark brown ears. The boy wears earth-brown clothing and the front of his wide-brimmed hat is pushed up to reveal dark eyes and sable-brown bangs and brows. The stag and dog are between us and the boat, and are surrounded by thick brushstrokes of parchment white to create ripples in the forest-green water. Only the open muzzle, part of the eye, and the tips of the stag’s antlers are above the water’s surface. To our right, a bare, fallen tree lies along the far riverbank parallel to the boat. The boat and water fill the lower half of the scene and the autumn trees fill the upper half. The artist has signed and dated the painting in the lower right, “Winslow Homer 1892.”",{"_295":550,"_297":551,"_299":552},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1491.jpg?dl=1","/art/hound-and-hunter-nga-33970","/galleries/style/american-gilded-age/hound-and-hunter-nga-33970",{"_291":292,"_293":294},{"_225":545,"_125":546,"_285":547},{"_276":542,"_278":543,"_280":525,"_282":544},137.3,86.1525634765625,71.1525634765625,{"_287":225,"_123":548,"_154":549,"_140":53},{"_287":125,"_123":288,"_154":289,"_140":290},{"_287":285,"_123":167,"_154":166,"_140":169},"artist/winslow-homer","More by Winslow Homer","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1491/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1491/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1491/1920.jpg","nga","national-gallery-of-art","National Gallery of Art, Washington",{"_311":569,"_313":570},{"_311":567,"_313":568},{"_311":565,"_313":566},{"_311":563,"_313":564},{"_311":561,"_313":562},"#c7b58a",0.0236,"#756d53",0.0921,"#4b402b",0.1098,"#342113",0.2821,"#251e11",0.4924,"Winslow Homer","winslow-homer","American, 1836–1910",1836,1910,"Boston, Massachusetts","Prouts Neck, Maine","Homer began as an illustrator, covering the Civil War for Harper’s Weekly, and first made his name in painting with scenes of soldiers and country life.","study-for-diana-and-her-attendants-among-the-constellations-si-chndm-1914-38-3","Study for \"Diana and Her Attendants among the Constellations\"",{"_42":514,"_222":515,"_380":516,"_382":383,"_384":517,"_386":518,"_388":-5,"_390":-5,"_392":519,"_140":99},"ca. 1894","Graphite on paper","42.9 × 67.8 cm (16 7/8 × 26 11/16 in.)",67.8,42.9,1.5276033773544058,[611,612,613,614,615],{"_221":359,"_222":360,"_42":361,"_304":498},"1914-38-3","Francis Augustus Lathrop drew this in about 1894, aged 45. The woman tips her head back slightly to look at us with dark eyes under arched eyebrows. Her cheeks are flushed and her coral-pink lips closed. His body faces our right in profile, and his head leans to his left and away from us. Light comes from our left to highlight his ear and the side of his chin, but throws his profile into shadow against the lighter background. The boy has short black hair and wears a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, black pants, and black shoes. The floor is loosely painted with streaks of earth brown, taupe, and dark moss green. The wall behind the boy is painted with visible strokes of parchment brown, peachy tan, pearl white, and fog gray. The space to our left of the boy is dark brown, and an outline of a standing person is sketched in the top left corner. A grid is overlaid across the boy’s body and the chair.",{"_295":1115,"_297":1116,"_299":1117},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/m/1606.jpg?dl=1","/art/study-for-the-dancing-lesson-the-banjo-player-nga-66414","/galleries/style/american-gilded-age/study-for-the-dancing-lesson-the-banjo-player-nga-66414",{"_291":292,"_293":294},{"_225":1112,"_125":1113,"_285":1114},{"_276":1109,"_278":1110,"_280":1111,"_282":1094},52.294189453125,64.5,37.294189453125,{"_287":225,"_123":911,"_154":912,"_140":87},{"_287":125,"_123":288,"_154":289,"_140":290},{"_287":285,"_123":167,"_154":166,"_140":169},"https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1606/480.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1606/960.jpg","https://img.ochreeditions.com/a/1606/1920.jpg",{"_311":1131,"_313":1132},{"_311":1129,"_313":1130},{"_311":1127,"_313":1128},{"_311":1125,"_313":1126},{"_311":1123,"_313":1124},"#b2a17f",0.111,"#8b775a",0.1413,"#463422",0.2197,"#6a543b",0.251,"#282017",0.277,{"_1134":-5,"_1135":1136,"_1137":1138,"_1139":8,"_1140":1141,"_1142":8},"user","csrf","f5d547fba7d238005fab5eb4339eb4b9bd960fb1","cartCount",0,"dropLive","legal",[1143,1144,1145,1146,1147,1148,1149,1150,1151,1152,1153,1154],"uploadsEnabled",{"_222":1177,"_20":1178},{"_222":1175,"_20":1176},{"_222":1173,"_20":1174},{"_222":1171,"_20":1172},{"_222":1169,"_20":1170},{"_222":1167,"_20":1168},{"_222":1165,"_20":1166},{"_222":1163,"_20":1164},{"_222":1161,"_20":1162},{"_222":1159,"_20":1160},{"_222":1157,"_20":1158},{"_222":1155,"_20":1156},"credits","Open-Access Credits","accessibility","Accessibility Statement","vulnerability-disclosure","Vulnerability Disclosure Policy","own-photo","Printing Your Own Photo","copyright","Copyright and DMCA Policy","agents","Agent & API Terms","acceptable-use","Acceptable Use Policy","cookies","Cookie Policy","privacy","Privacy Policy","limited-editions","Limited Editions and Certificates","sale","Terms of Sale","terms","Terms of Use"]
