# Nocturne, from Venice, a Series of Twelve Etchings (the "First Venice Set"), in The 19th century

James McNeill Whistler made this in 1879–80, aged about 45. It is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Our note:

> Night settles over the Venetian lagoon, the far shore reduced to a thin line of buildings between dark water and sky. Whistler went to Venice in 1879 with a commission for twelve etchings and stayed fourteen months, returning with dozens of plates.

## The artist

[James McNeill Whistler](https://www.ochreeditions.com/artists/james-mcneill-whistler), American, 1834–1903

Whistler spent part of his boyhood in Russia, left West Point without graduating and trained as a painter in Paris before settling in London in 1859.
