# San Giorgio, in 19th-century United States

James McNeill Whistler made this in 1880, aged 46. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

Our note:

> Masted ships ride at anchor in the foreground, their reflections trembling in the water, while across the lagoon the church of San Giorgio Maggiore and its neighbours lie in a faint line along the horizon.
