# A View on a High Road, in Meindert Hobbema

Meindert Hobbema painted this in 1665, aged 27. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

Our note:

> A sandy road winds past cottages and gnarled trees under a vivid, cloud-studded sky, alive with everyday incident: a traveller resting on a log with a bundle on his back, a well-dressed couple strolling towards us, children launching a toy sailboat on a pond while a dog sniffs nearby, and a rider further on.
