# Claire Campbell, in Édouard Manet

Édouard Manet painted this in 1876, aged 44. It is now at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

From the museum's label:

> During the late 1870s, Edouard Manet began to experience health problems that made it difficult for him to work in oil painting. Instead, he began to draw using pastel, a powdery medium that allowed him to render line and color with each stroke.

[Édouard Manet](https://www.ochreeditions.com/artists/edouard-manet), French, 1832–1883

Manet came from a prosperous Parisian family, trained under Thomas Couture and studied the old masters, Velázquez above all. In the 1860s he provoked critics with Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe and Olympia, modern subjects painted in flat, frank colour with little modelling.
