# Wang Gai

Chinese, active c. 1677–1705

Wang Gai was a painter active in Nanjing in the late seventeenth century, remembered above all as the principal compiler of the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting. Its first part, published in 1679, set out the forms of rocks, trees and other landscape elements and the brush methods of earlier masters in woodblock illustrations, and the manual became a standard primer for painters in China and Japan for centuries.
