## About this work

Edward Mitchell Bannister painted this in 1898, aged 70. It is now at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC.

### How it was made

- **Oil paint.** Pigment ground in a drying oil, usually linseed. It dries slowly, so painters could blend on the canvas, build up thin translucent glazes, and rework a picture over weeks. Canvas replaced wooden panels in the 1500s because it is lighter and can be rolled.

born St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada 1828-died Providence, RI 1901

Bannister grew up in St Andrews, New Brunswick, moved to Boston and worked as a barber while training as a painter. Around 1870 he settled in Providence, Rhode Island, where his pastoral landscapes, influenced by the French Barbizon painters, found admirers. His Under the Oaks won a first-prize medal at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, making him the first African American artist to win a major national award. He helped found the Providence Art Club.
