## About this work

The Virgin is sitting on the ground, seen from the right side. The Child sits in her lap; she is holding him. The head of the Virgin is turned toward her right shoulder.

Fortunato Duranti drew this in 1820–1850, aged about 33. It is now at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.

### How it was made

- **Graphite.** Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
- **Pen and ink.** Drawn with a quill or reed pen, often with wash added by brush to model light and shadow.
