## About this work

Egyptian painting: Uncle Sam in right profile seated on throne at left. Female figure at right in right profile, holding balls entitled: "CUBA" and "PORTO RICO". Eagle, upper left.

_Text from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum._

Victor Wilbour painted this in 1917. It is now at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.

### How it was made

- **Oil paint.** Pigment ground in a drying oil, usually linseed. It dries slowly, so painters could blend on the canvas, build up thin translucent glazes, and rework a picture over weeks. Canvas replaced wooden panels in the 1500s because it is lighter and can be rolled.
- **Pen and ink.** Drawn with a quill or reed pen, often with wash added by brush to model light and shadow.
