## About this work

Henry Golden Dearth's composition presents a farm worker guiding a pair of workhorses after a day of harvesting grain. The painting's title refers the short pieces of grain stalks left in the ground after the crop has been cut.

_Text from the Cleveland Museum of Art._

Henry Golden Dearth painted this in about 1909, aged about 40. It is now at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

### How it was made

- **Oil paint.** Pigment ground in a drying oil, usually linseed. It dries slowly, so painters could blend on the canvas, build up thin translucent glazes, and rework a picture over weeks. Canvas replaced wooden panels in the 1500s because it is lighter and can be rolled.
