## About this work

Sketch of a river with figures fishing.

_Text from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum._

William Stanley Haseltine drew this in about 1855, aged 20. It is now at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.

### How it was made

- **Graphite.** Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.

American, 1835–1900

Haseltine was born in Philadelphia, studied at Harvard and trained in Düsseldorf, where he travelled and painted with Albert Bierstadt and Worthington Whittredge. Back in America he became known for crisp, sharply lit views of the rocky New England coast at Nahant, Narragansett and Mount Desert Island. In 1869 he settled permanently in Rome, painting the coasts of Italy, Sicily and Capri in the same clear manner.
