## About this work

Man with a beard, facing left, his left hand gesturing upwards. The lower half of his coat outlined.

_Text from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum._

Daniel Huntington drew this in 1858, aged 42. It is now at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.

### How it was made

- **Graphite.** Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
- **Laid paper.** Handmade on a mould of close-set wires, which leave fine parallel lines you can see when the sheet is held to the light.

Huntington studied with Samuel F. B. Morse and Henry Inman in New York and made several journeys to Italy, which shaped his early allegorical and religious pictures, such as Mercy’s Dream. He became one of New York’s most sought-after portraitists, painting politicians, financiers and clergy, and served as President of the National Academy of Design for two long terms.
