George V. Vezolles painted this in 1935/1942, aged about 50. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

### What you’re looking at

The image displays wavy lines and shapes with a mix of colors, creating an abstract composition. Curved lines are intertwined, resembling braided patterns or woven fabric textures. On the left, there is a large, organic shape bordered by red, green, and beige. The right side showcases a rhythmic pattern resembling a braided rug, with strands of red, blue, and brown. The overall composition resembles a textured textile piece.

### How it was made

- **Watercolour.** Pigment in gum arabic, thinned with water and laid in transparent washes. Nothing white is painted: the light is the paper showing through.
- **Graphite.** Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
- **Pen and ink.** Drawn with a quill or reed pen, often with wash added by brush to model light and shadow.
