## About this work

Fra Angelico became a Dominican friar early in his painting career. This panel was almost certainly once part of the major altarpiece he painted around 1440 for the church of the Dominican convent of San Marco, in Florence, that featured a central panel of the Virgin and Child with saints and ten additional panels depicting saints atop clouds. This panel of Saint Anthony Abbot, considered the founder of monasticism, would have been among them.

_Text from the Art Institute of Chicago._

Fra Angelico painted this in 1440–41, aged about 40. It is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.

_Description from the Art Institute of Chicago._

### How it was made

- **Tempera.** Pigment bound with egg yolk. It dries in minutes and can’t be blended wet, so painters built up form with fine, hatched strokes. It was Europe’s main panel technique before oil.
