## About this work

Interior, striped wall, framed picture hanging; a pope, seated on a low pedestal under a rectangular canopy, speaks to a kneeling visitor. The visitor is entreating him with a document, while two cardinals flanking the pope and two courtiers at some distance to the right look on. Graphite marks of initial drawing, including sketched head of third courtier, remain throughout.

_Text from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum._

Belisario Corenzio drew this in 1590–1646. It is now at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.

### How it was made

- **Graphite.** Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
- **Pen and ink.** Drawn with a quill or reed pen, often with wash added by brush to model light and shadow.
- **Laid paper.** Handmade on a mould of close-set wires, which leave fine parallel lines you can see when the sheet is held to the light.
