## About this work

Robert Stewart painted this in about 1936. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

### What you’re looking at

The image displays a single ornate vase with a bulbous base and a ruffled top, taking up most of the frame. The vase is predominantly pink with red accents, the ruffled top is highlighted with white on the inner edges, and there's a crisscross pattern visible on the body. Against a plain beige background, the vase is centrally positioned.

### How it was made

- **Watercolour.** Pigment in gum arabic, thinned with water and laid in transparent washes. Nothing white is painted: the light is the paper showing through.
- **Graphite.** Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
