## About this work

This 18th-century folding screen, part of a pair, is by one of the best-known painters in Japan, Soga Shōhaku, revered for his unusual subjects and eccentric style. This screen depicts a rising dragon encased in clouds who is kicking up the wind and rain, affecting the boats on the water. In his wake, the dragon leaves behind a turbulent atmosphere, with dark clouds surrounding Fuji.

_Text from the Art Institute of Chicago._

Soga Shohaku painted this in about 1761-1762, aged about 31. It is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.

### What you’re looking at

A work made of pair of six panel screens; ink and light colors on paper.

_Description from the Art Institute of Chicago._

### How it was made

- **Folding screen.** Panels joined by paper hinges, so the screen stands by itself in a zigzag. The picture runs across every panel, and screens were often made in pairs.
- **Ink on paper.** Ink made from soot and animal glue, ground with water on an inkstone. A single brush can give a hair-fine line or a broad wash, and nothing can be corrected.
