## About this work

Rose Campbell-Gerke painted this in about 1940, aged 61. It is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

### What you’re looking at

The image depicts an iron sculpture with grapevine motifs. The color scheme is primarily brown, with a textured appearance. The grapevine design is arranged vertically and includes grape clusters and leaves. The sculpture is mounted on a base and includes an iron bar at the top. The artist's signature "ROSE CAMPBELL GERKE" is visible in the lower right corner of the image.

### How it was made

- **Watercolour.** Pigment in gum arabic, thinned with water and laid in transparent washes. Nothing white is painted: the light is the paper showing through.
- **Graphite.** Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.
- **Pen and ink.** Drawn with a quill or reed pen, often with wash added by brush to model light and shadow.
