## About this work

The shores of lake at right and at rear, beneath a mountain range. Three rowboats on the water.

_Text from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum._

Daniel Huntington drew this (August 23, 1856), aged 40. It is now at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.

### How it was made

- **Chalk.** Natural black, red and white chalks. Used together on toned paper they could give the warmth of flesh with very little effort, and they were favourites for studies from life.
- **Graphite.** Pencil. Graphite has been used for drawing since the 1500s; in 1795 Nicolas-Jacques Conté mixed it with clay, so its hardness could be graded.

American, 1816–1906

Huntington studied with Samuel F. B. Morse and Henry Inman in New York and made several journeys to Italy, which shaped his early allegorical and religious pictures, such as Mercy’s Dream. He became one of New York’s most sought-after portraitists, painting politicians, financiers and clergy, and served as President of the National Academy of Design for two long terms. He was also a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and served as its vice-president.
